Industry data suggests more than 90 per cent of alarm calls turn out to be false, so if your system keeps crying wolf, you are not dealing with a rare fault, you are dealing with a pattern. Understanding what causes false alarms starts with recognising that most nuisance triggers come from a small number of fixable things: pets moving through a detection field, insects and cobwebs on a sensor lens, air conditioning or a heater pushing warm air across a room, sunlight through glass, a door that shifts in the wind, or a battery on its way out.

Read the alarm history before you touch a single sensor

Open your panel, app or monitoring event log and find the exact zone or device that activated. This one step saves hours, because it turns a vague complaint (the alarm keeps going off) into a specific problem (the lounge motion detector activates on windy afternoons).

For each event, note five things: the time, the arming mode, the room, the sensor name, and what was happening nearby. Was the air conditioning running, was the sun low against a west-facing window, was the dog left inside, and had the panel shown a low battery or tamper message beforehand? Patterns fall out quickly, because repeated activations from one motion detector usually point to pets, insects, airflow or poor positioning, while repeated door or window contact alerts usually mean misalignment, loose mounting or a door that moves in the wind. Recognising these common false alarm triggers early makes it much easier to narrow down the cause and apply the right fix.

Keep the log going after you make changes, with a line for what you altered and the date, since it is the only reliable way to tell whether a fix worked or whether the same zone is still misbehaving. There is a financial reason to be prompt, too: depending on your local council, monitoring arrangement or emergency response policy, repeated false activations can attract fees or a slower response next time.

If the history points to a motion detector in a room your pets use while the system is armed, start there. Passive infrared sensors work by detecting the sharp rise in infrared energy created by a warm body entering the detection area, and a dog or cat can look enough like a person to set one off.

Check whether the detector supports a pet-immune setting, or whether it is a pet-compatible PIR model. Pet-immune alarm systems typically work up to a stated weight, commonly quoted around 80 pounds (roughly 36 kilograms), and they have real limits: they will not cope with a very large dog, and several pets moving together can register as one larger mass.

Next, look at where the sensor is pointing, and re-aim it away from normal pet routes, food and water bowls, sleeping spots, and any sofa, shelf or bench a cat climbs. Height is the trap most people miss, because a pet on the stairs or on the back of a lounge rises into the detection field at roughly human height, which makes it far more likely to read as a person. Mount the detector higher and aim it at doors and openings rather than staircases. If adjustment alone is not enough, use pet gates to keep animals out of rooms with active motion sensors when the system is armed, or rely on door and glass-break sensors in those rooms instead.

Then test. Arm the system in the mode you actually use, let the pets move around where it is safe to do so, and confirm two things: that they no longer trigger the sensor, and that hallways, doors and likely entry routes are still properly covered.

Re-aim detectors and tighten contacts to prevent alarm false triggers

Fix the detector's field of view before you touch sensitivity. Motion sensors react to rapid heat changes and moving objects in their detection area, so anything that moves or changes temperature quickly is a candidate: air conditioning vents, heaters, ceiling fans, curtains lifting in a draught, indoor plants, hanging decorations, balloons, and direct sun through glass. Reflective surfaces such as mirrors and glass cabinets can bounce heat and light into the lens as well.

Walk into the room and crouch to the sensor's eye level, and if it is aimed at a window, a heat source, a vent, a fan or a bright afternoon patch of sunlight, that is your problem. Redirect vents away from the detector, move plants and decorations out of the zone, and relocate the sensor if a simple re-aim will not clear the trouble, keeping in mind that the best place to install a motion sensor is one that avoids these heat and movement triggers altogether. A wireless unit is usually straightforward to shift, whereas a hardwired one is a job for a technician.

Only once placement is right should you consider sensitivity. If your system offers the setting, make one small reduction, then walk-test the room to confirm that a person crossing the space still registers, because turning sensitivity down blindly is how coverage quietly disappears.

Door and window contacts need a different check: the two parts must be aligned, firmly mounted and close enough together when the door or window is fully shut. Tighten loose screws, replace tired adhesive, and pay attention to any door or window that rattles, has warped, or fails to latch cleanly, because it will shift in wind or with a change in weather and trip the sensor while you are out.

Clear insects, cobwebs and dust from detector housings

An insect crawling across a lens sits close enough to the detector to register as motion, which makes bugs and cobwebs a common cause of repeat activations from a single device, particularly overnight and around outdoor-facing or garage sensors.

Clean gently. A dry microfibre cloth, a soft brush, or careful vacuuming near the device (not inside it) is enough for the detector face, mounting plate and the corners around it, and it is worth clearing cobwebs from the sensor, nearby windows, eaves and outdoor entry points at the same time. What you must not do is spray insecticide, cleaning product or any liquid into the sensor cover, because moisture and chemical residue damage electronics and leave a film on the lens that creates its own problems. If insects keep coming back, treat the surrounding area rather than the detector, and check exterior-facing devices more often than interior ones.

If you find insects inside a sealed detector cover, or the housing is cracked, loose or damaged, stop and flag it for professional inspection, because prising a sensor apart usually costs you the warranty and often the calibration.

Replace batteries, test the fix, and know when to hand it over

Weak batteries cause unreliable signals, odd faults and nuisance alerts, so replace them in sensors, keypads and wireless devices as soon as a low-battery warning appears rather than waiting for the next activation. A flat cell is the cheapest possible explanation to rule out.

After every change, whether it is a clean, a battery swap, a sensitivity adjustment or a re-aim, put the system into its test mode and confirm the sensor still detects real movement or a real opening, which verifies the fix without triggering a dispatch. While you are in the app, tidy the admin: check that user codes, contact lists and your monitoring PIN or cancellation details are current, because if an accidental activation does happen, you will need the correct PIN to cancel the response before anyone is sent out. It is also worth making sure everyone in the house, along with any regular visitor or pet sitter, knows how to arm, disarm and cancel an alarm.

Then set a light routine. Review the alarm history monthly, act on battery alerts when they appear, clean around detectors periodically, and have the system professionally inspected at least once a year.
